An example of a Glashutte Original designed tourbillion. In horology, a tourbillon or tourbillion is an addition to the mechanics of a watch escapement. Invented in 1795 by Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet, a tourbillon counters the effects of gravity by mounting the escapement and balance wheel in a rotating cage, a way to negate the effect of gravity when the timepiece is rotated. This idea originally was an attempt to improve accuracy of tourbillions. Tourbilons are still included in some expensive modern watches as a novelty and demonstration of watchmaking ability. The mechanism is usually exposed on the watch's face to make it show. NOTE: There are many "Tourbillon" fakes that emulate this tourbillion feature with the oscillating balance wheel visible through the watch dial; however, these are not tourbillons. -Glashütte Original is a German watch making company founded in 1994 by the privatization of VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe. VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe was an East German conglomerate formed in 1951 from the watch companies based in Glashütte. This included A. Lange & Söhne, founded in 1845. Glashütte Original is one of the few watchmakers that use its own movements, and it has 10 proprietary movement innovations. Glashütte Original is currently owned by The Swatch Group.
