(Make sure to turn on the video annotations.) Development of the male-d spider wasp (Auplopus carbonarius, family Pompilidae) from the cell-d. The grub made an incomplete cocoon with a large hole, maybe due to the deprivation of silk. You can see the transforming process of pupa through the hole. From late-June to late-July 2009 in Japan. Soundtrack (audioswapped): "Immortality" by Medwyn Goodall 育房dから採集したヒメベッコウ幼虫の飼育記録です。泥巣を解体した時点で既に殆ど食べ尽くしていたので、クモの同定は無理でした。この幼虫は繭作りが不完全で、大きな穴を残したまま蛹化しました。どうやら営繭の足場（丸めた付箋紙）が必要らしいと気づいて※囲ってやるまでにプラスチック容器の底で何日も無駄に糸を吐いていたので、絹糸が枯渇したのでしょう。この穴のお陰で繭の中を覗けるようになり、幼虫が前蛹となりやがて黒い蛹へと変態する様子を観察することが出来ました。容器が乾燥し過ぎないよう注意しつつ見守ったところ、無事に♂が羽化しました。 ※飼育書（『ハチの観察と飼育』ニュー・サイエンス社）にもこんなことは書いていなかったため、気づくのが遅れました。 |

Colony activities of the paper wasp (Polistes nipponensis (= P. mandarinus), family Vespidae) on late-August 2008 in Japan. Return of the prodigal sons? I couldn't tell if they were born from this nest-d and then evicted. Alternatively, males from other colonies were cruising around the nest, waiting for the emergence of new queens to mate. Members on the nest showed threat displays when males approached too close. 別の巣から飛来した♂が交尾する相手となる新女王が羽化したかどうか様子を見に来ているのだろうか？ 口減らしで巣から追い出された成熟♂が未練がましく飛び回っているのか？ 来シーズンは個体識別のマーキングをしっかり施してこの謎も解きたい。巣に接近し過ぎた個体に対しては在巣の成虫が一斉に威嚇する（映像無し）。♂が巣に降り立つことは一度もなかった。 |
